The Passyunk Square and Andrew Jackson Elementary School communities grieve with the family that tragically lost their sweet 7-year-old son. Sebastian Gerena collapsed at school on May 21. Despite the heroic efforts of Jackson staff and volunteers and the doctors and staff at CHOP, we lost him to an undiagnosed heart condition.

Community members and community groups have quickly and generously come together to offer emotional and financial support to the family. We wrapped our arms around each other and the family, and Sebastian was laid to rest on May 28. The funeral celebrated Sebastian’s life and love. He was a huge fan of Spider-Man and his pallbearers paid tribute to him by dressing as other heroes from the Hall of Justice.

With deepest sympathy to his family, may Sebastian rest in peace and may his life inspire us to come even closer together.
