PHS has provided us with some answers to Frequently Asked Questions about pop-up gardens.

What is a Pop Up Garden?

PHS Pop Up Gardens are temporary gardens that transform under-utilized or neglected spaces in Philadelphia into inviting places for all to enjoy. Combining progressive design and landscape innovation each garden provides an outdoor venue for social gatherings while promoting PHS programs. In addition to spontaneous socializing, formal programming may include PHS workshops, outdoor learning, movie nights, special events and fundraisers.

What are the dates the garden will be open?

The Pop Up Garden will be open approximately June 1st until October 1st.

What hours will the Pop Up Garden be open?

Monday – Thursday: 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.
Saturday: 2 p.m. – midnight
Friday: 11 a.m. – midnight Sunday: noon – 10 p.m.

Food and beverage service will only be available:
Monday – Thursday: 5 p.m. – 10 p.m.
Friday – Saturday: 2 p.m. – midnight
Sunday: noon – 10 p.m.

How will the Pop Up Garden impact parking?

In 2014, we worked with the Philadelphia Parking Authority to measure the number of cars parked near that summer’s Pop Up Garden, when compared to the same months in 2013. They found that fewer cars parked there in 2014, with the Pop Up Garden present, than in the summer before. A survey of Pop Up Garden attendees also revealed that the majority of patrons come from the immediate neighborhood and the neighborhoods directly surrounding the Pop Up. These key pieces of information seem to indicate that the majority of Pop Up Garden attendees are most likely arriving by foot, bike, or public transportation due to their proximity to the garden.

What about noise levels?

The Pop Up Garden has defined hours during which music or performances may take place, which will not exceed 9PM on weekdays and 10PM on weekends. The Pop Up Garden will abide by regulations set forth in the Philadelphia Code Chapter 10-400 regarding Noise and Excessive Vibration.

Who will be providing the food and beverage on-site?

Concessions will be provided to you by the restaurant group of Cantina, the Khyber Pass Pub, and Royal Tavern.

Are there restrictions on who can access the garden?

Anyone can enter the garden when it’s open. When concessions are being sold, our food and beverage partners will be staffing the entrance to check IDs. Patrons 21 or older will receive wristbands. Staff will ensure patrons do not exit the space with beverages. This will be strictly enforced.

How will the site be maintained?

PHS has contracted with our food and beverage partner to provide daily trash collection and removal. PHS staff will water and weed the planting beds and remove any additional trash that gathers on-site during the day.

Will there be restroom facilities?

Yes, restrooms will be available at the Pop Up Garden.
