Here are some tips on a common problem – how to dispose of unused medication that you no longer want. These rules apply to prescription as well as over the counter medicines. Remember, it’s not a good idea to give your prescription medicines to friends – there is probably a good reason that person cannot get the medicine from their own doctor, and you don’t want to be responsible for them having an adverse reaction.
1. Check the labels on your medication bottles – they may instruct you on how to dispose of the unused medicine
2. Never flush medications down the toilet unless the instructions specifically tell you to (some meds are safe to flush, but most aren’t)
3. Look for drug take back programs in your neighborhood – times when you can drop off unused medications for safe disposal (http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/)
4. If none of these apply, take the medication out of it’s original container and put it in plastic bag or lidded can. Mix it in your trash bag with something undesirable, like used kitty litter or coffee grounds. This helps prevent children or pets from eating the medicine.
You can also ask you pharmacist, however, do not bring unwanted medicines to your doctor’s office for disposal. Most doctor’s offices have no idea how to dispose of these medicines. (Trust me, I work in a doctor’s office!)

This month, Gary Tumolo is our featured neighbor. I sat down with Gary a few weeks ago to learn more about him and all that he has done for the neighborhood (We met at Stateside, and had some excellent small plates of gnocchi and cauliflower…kudos to the friendly staff!).

Gary volunteers for the Zoning Committee for Passyunk Square, which meets monthly. All neighbors are welcome to attend the monthly meetings (see the PSCA website for information), during which they review zoning applications in the neighborhood. They then send letters to the zoning commission of Philadelphia, which makes the final decisions. In this way, Gary and other zoning board volunteers make sure we have a say in what happens in our neighborhood.

Gary also helps out a lot with other neighborhood activities, like the Christmas tree sale, and the Annual Home Tour (which is coming up October 12th!). Gary has attended very Home Tour every year since its inception 10 years ago, was on the Home Tour Planning Committee in 2009 and 2010, and continues to volunteer the day of the event. Gary moved to the Passyunk Square neighborhood in 2002. He is originally from South Philadelphia, but spent several years in San Diego before moving back to the Philadelphia area. Angel D’Ippolito, PSCA VP and head of the Neighborhood Ambassador Program, had this to say about Gary: “When asked to help promote our holiday tree sale, Gary went above and beyond expectations. Not only did he write a custom holiday song for PSCA, but he somehow managed to organize a group of casual shower-singers into a real-life caroling extravaganza. We had so much fun and brought a whole lot of smiles to the neighborhood that day. I’m not sure we could have done it with such pizazz without Gary’s positive attitude.”

Gary’s day job, for which he actually gets paid, is for The Office of Housing and Development in Philadelphia. Gary manages the Redevelopment Authority of Philadelphia’s contracts as well as Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) contracts. The HOPWA program is a Federal program dedicated to address the housing needs of persons living with HIV/AIDS and their families.

Gary was awarded a certificate of appreciation in August from the City of Philadelphia Operation Town Watch Integrated Services in recognition for all the volunteer work he has done for the neighborhood. It is neighbors like Gary who make Passyunk Square such a wonderful place to live and work.

Sorry for the delay in posting the weekly tip. Last week, my sister’s family house burned down. She lived there with her husband and two boys. Luckily, no one was hurt. There were five other houses affected in the fire. Also luckily, they have excellent homeowner’s insurance and will be able to recover financially. So this week, my tip is to check your homeowner’s insurance policy. Most of us in Passyunk Square live in row homes, so you are more susceptible to fire since a neighbor’s accident five houses down can affect your home. If you rent, I strongly advise getting renter’s insurance. No one wants to spend the money, but when you need it, you’ll be glad you did. You need to ask your insurance company about 3 main things: the home replacement value, if it is a total loss, the amount of money they will give you to replace the contents inside your home, and how much they will pay for a rental or hotel accommodations while you are displaced. If you have a shore home, you should consider flood insurance, as most homeowner policies do not cover for flooding (remember, that is why so many were devasted after Katrina in New Orleans – they did not have flood insurance). Lastly, I strongly urge you to have a computer backup that is online – NOT located at your residence. Crashplan is a good company to check out for this. Remember, if your computer is destroyed, your data, including all your photos, are lost. If your computer backup is a hard drive in your home, that will be lost as well. Once again, my sister’s family was lucky in this regard and most of their photos were recoverable because they had offsite backups of them. Trust me, no one thinks it will happen to them – until it does.
