Your Christmas tree has treated you to another great holiday season, don’t return the favor by sending it to rot in some landfill. Treecycle it! On Saturday, January 7th from 10am to 4pm, you can bring your tree to Columbus Square park (corner of 13th and Reed streets) and have it turned into wood chips and mulch that will be used in local parks and gardens.

A $5 donation is suggested to cover the costs of the tree chipping. Please be sure to remove all decorations (they don’t make good mulch). Unfortunately, we can’t take early drop-offs so make your plans now to be there between 10am and 4pm. Please note that the City of Philadelphia does not recycle trees left at the curb.

Do you have a couple hours you can offer to help out with this event? We’re looking for a few good volunteers. Email contact@passyunk.org if you’re interested.

From now until December 16, the City of Philadelphia Department of Streets is providing curbside collection of bagged leaves citywide. During this program, leaves will be collected for composting purposes such as fertilizing gardens and nourishing trees. Only bagged leaf collection will be offered. There will be no mechanical leaf collection. This program is offered to citizens receiving City collection of trash and recycling materials.

Leaves will only be collected in brown paper biodegradable bags, which can be purchased at most major hardware or home improvement stores. If your leaf collection needs are small, reused brown paper bags from the supermarket are also acceptable. The Streets Department does not provide bags.

Set leaf bags out next to trash and recyclables on your regular trash day.

Leaves set out in plastic bags will be collected as trash, not recycling.

Never mix trash or other recyclable materials with bagged leaves. This contaminates leaves and makes them unfit for recycling and composting purposes.

Use as many bags as needed, maximum 40 lbs. each.

No collection will occur on a City holiday.

Passyunk Square Civic Association (PSCA) announces an Electronic Collection Event TOMORROW, October 15, 2011 in the Acme parking lot at Passyunk Ave. and Reed St. The event will take place from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. and residents are encouraged to bring “anything with a plug.” All household electronics including computers, printers, microwaves, air-conditioners, metals and small appliances will be accepted. Small business owners with less than 50 employees are also encouraged to participate.

We are also looking for volunteers to help us out with this event. If you can spare an hour or two between noon and 4pm on October 15, please email contact (at) passyunk.org. We promise you won’t have to lift any washers or dryers, maybe just the occasional blender.

PSCA and eForce Compliance, Philadelphia’s only R2 certified e-waste recycler, are sponsoring this event. eForce is eager to bring Passyunk Square their first collection event and provide its residents with the services to properly dispose of their used electronics. Electronics are often thrown in the trash by residents because there are simply few convenient drop off locations available. eForce Compliance allows residents to get rid of their household clutter while recycling responsibly!

This event is part of the “UnLitter Us” South Philly launch being hosted by many South Philadelphia civic and neighborhood associations. All local area residents of South Philadelphia and surrounding areas are encouraged to participate in the days events, and to also bring their obsolete electronics to be responsibly recycled.

So head down to your basement and get ready to clear out all those old tape decks, eight track players, VCRs and other obsolete technology and bring it on by to be recycled.

In partnership with RecycleBank, the company behind the Philadelphia Recycling Rewards program, RecycleNOW Philadelphia is now training community recycling activists to sign people up for the program so we can help more people recycle more material. Residents can help make a difference in their community by helping to sign-up neighbors, co-workers, friends, family, church members, reading club, or anyone else!

Why should you become a Community Recycling Activist?
1) You — and 12,000 recycling supporters like you – demanded RecycleBank! Now that the program is citywide, we need to make it successful by getting more people signed up.

2) Recycling Rewards are accumulated on a community basis, so the more of your neighbors that participate in the program, the more rewards you all receive!

3) Despite making tremendous strides in improving recycling in Philadelphia, 80% of residential waste is still going to landfills and incinerators. We must do better, and the rewards program provides the incentive that many people need to start recycling, or to recycle more.

Attend a Community Activist Training in your neighborhood where recycling experts will answer commonly asked questions, and provide you all the information and materials you need to help sign up others.

RecycleNOW South Philadelphia Community Activist Training
South Philadelphia
Thursday, January 27, 6:30- 8:00 p.m.
Columbus Square Park and Recreation Center at 12th and Wharton streets

RSVP at https://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1152/p/salsa/event/common/public/?event_KEY=64904

For more information, contact Katie Edwards at 215.567.4004, ext. 102 or kedwards@cleanair.org

The RecycleNOW Philadelphia Campaign is a project of the Recycling Alliance of Philadelphia, a coalition of organizations and individuals working together to promote expanded recycling in the City of Philadelphia in order to improve the environment, economy, and quality of life in our City. We advocate for public policy and direct action to result in more recycling by more people, waste reduction, and a movement towards zero waste.

More than 20 local civic and nonprofit organizations are working together to recycle trees this holiday season. For the third year in a row, the City of Philadelphia will not be collecting holiday trees for recycling. As a result, any trees left at the curb will go into landfills or incinerators, causing air and water pollution and contributing to global warming.

Instead, with sponsorship by Bartlett Tree Experts and Schectman Tree Care these volunteer groups are working to have trees chipped and reused to beautify local dog runs, community gardens and parks.

$5 suggested donation. Please remove all decorations.

Date: Saturday, January 8th, 2011

Location: Columbus Square Park at 13th and Reed streets

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Early Drop-Off: At northeast corner of 13th and Reed, donation can be dropped off at 1415 S. 13th St (private residence).
