One of PSCA’s ongoing goals is to reduce the amount of litter in our neighborhood. We are calling one of our latest initatives the Trash Think Tank. This is a collaborative effort with the other South Philly civic associations (LoMo, Newbold, and EPX) to contact our local businesses that offer food or beverage take-out to advise them of a code requirement to provide a trash receptacle outside of their premises during business hours – separate from the big belly or city trash cans. The Streets Enforcement Department is planning to fine businesses that are not complying with this code. If a business is found to be in non-compliance, there is a first-time fee of up to $90 plus court fees.
In order to educate business owners on the requirement, we have been visiting businesses with take-out service to educate them on the code so that they can avoid fines. In addition, we are working with our local businesses to show them that a cleaner store front equals more customers. Merchants that do a good job will be recognized by our civic association and will receive free advertising.
Over the next month we will publish a list of take-out businesses that have had or recently added a trash can so you can personally thank them on your next visit. We want to let our local businesses know we appreciate their part in keeping our neighborhood clean!
