3rd Annual Art Auction – A Thank You!

As I write, I am still basking in the afterglow of a wonderful PSCA event. This past Friday night the 3rd Annual Passyunk Square Civic Association Art Auction took place. The team of Michele DiVeterano, Elisabeth Garson, Elaine Johnson, Ted Lewis, Joy Manning, Marilyn MacGregor, John Schmiechen, and Sarah Sitzler took the idea of taking the art auction up a notch to a level I had not even dreamed of! Thank you for all of your hard work, it truly paid off! In addition the overwhelming generosity of artists, volunteers, sponsors and of course all who attended helped to make the Art Auction ‘The Event’ of the year!

9th Street Clean Up – Thursday April 3rd, 10 am – 12 pm

The PSCA will be participating in a 9th Street clean up organized by City’s Community Partnership Program and the 9th Street Business Association. All About Trees!

Trees beautify the neighborhood, provide shade and health benefits and improve property values. To date, PSCA has helped plant hundreds of trees in the neighborhood and we’re ready to plant more! There are many opportunities for you to help:

April 12
Yard Tree Giveaway
10 am – Noon, Columbus Square

Pre-registration for the giveaways is over, but if you have space in your yard for a tree, you can come as a walk-up participant and still get up to 2 trees per property! Choose from 11 different tree species including several fruit trees.

Please note that you’ll need plant these trees yourself – we’ll show you how – and these are trees to be planted on your property, not on the street.  A great opportunity to add some beauty to your backyard for free!

To learn more about this program, and see a list of other giveaway dates and locations, visit the Tree Philly website.

April 26
PSCA Tree Care and Planting Day
Meet at 8:45 at Capitolo Playground (9th and Federal)

A fun day out in the neighborhood! We’ll be planting just a few trees this time and focusing on mulching and weeding at some key sites in the neighborhood.  Bring a shovel if you have one or we’ll have tools on hand too. After party TBA.

May 5
Tree applications due for the Fall 2014 PSCA planting, download one here.

We also encourage you to talk to your neighbors about applying for a tree. If you’re interested in applying as a block get in touch with us at beautification@passyunk.org.

And if you still can’t get enough – we do occasional pruning in the neighborhood and are always looking for more help. If you’re a Tree Tender or just know a lot about trees, or want to learn more email us at beautification@passyunk.org to get involved.  We also encourage you to consider becoming a PHS Tree Tender.  The next training session starts April 30.

Passyunk Gardens opening April 27

Spring is here and we’re ready to start planting in Passyunk Gardens at the corner of Wharton and East Passyunk. Opening day will be April 27th  but you may see us in there before getting things started.

We’re always looking for more help tending to the space so if you’re interested in being part of the group that works on this email us at beautification@passyunk.org. You can also keep up with what’s going on by following us on Facebook or @passyunkgardens on twitter or instagram.  Garden policies and a garden plan will be updated for 2014 soon on our website as well!

PWD Soak in Up Adoption program

PSCA is partnering with the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) this year to monitor the five Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) sites we have in our neighborhood.  We have a great team of neighbors who have been trained on what to look for and how to report problems, but we can always use more help.  If you’re interested in getting involved email beautification@passyunk.org.

You can also learn more about the innovative work the water department is doing to manage stormwater at PWD’s phillywatershed.org website.

2014 Philly Spring Cleanup

April 5, 2014 from 9-2; Kick off at Passyunk Gardens (E. Passyunk Ave & Wharton streets). Sign up at http://www.philadelphiastreets.com/psc-registration/fe-psc-event-volunteer-map.php

Our PSCA event is listed under South Philly, project #427.  You can also contact trash@passyunk.org to let us know you are volunteering.

This is PSCA’s 3rd consecutive year participating in the Philly Spring Cleanup.  The number of volunteers as well as the enthusiasm has grown each year.  Please join us as we clean the areas of 9th and 10th Streets from Dickinson to Wharton with a focus on the Alley located at S Percy St. off of 9th St.  Objective is to sweep and remove litter on the sidewalks and curbs and remove debris from storm drains in the area.  We will focus on the S. Percy St alley (off of 9th St.).

Many residents have requested recycling bins so we will have bins available.  We will also sign people up for recycle rewards and hand out circular free stickers.

We welcome neighbors and friends to join us to make this another successful event. If you can’t participate in the event, please consider doing your part to sweep up you block with your neighbors.  We will have supplies (extra brooms, bags, gloves) available at Passyunk Gardens.

Come join us for the event or to stop by and pick up supplies to clean your block.
