The garden is in full swing and a reminder to neighbors that we open to all and always need help! With the help of PHS’s City Harvest program and the Philadelphia Chapter of the Penn State Extension Master Gardener’s program, we run the garden as a demonstration garden and grow a wide variety of edible plants. Produce is donated to local partner and shared with volunteers and visitor! Right now we’ve got kale, collards, garlic and other greens finishing up and tomatoes and peppers just taking off. We’re preparing for another try at hay bale gardening and getting ready to tie up the hops.
Sundays from 4-6 are our open hours and we need volunteers to greet visitors and show them around during these times, bring a snack to share, play some music or otherwise help make these open hours a fun time. Volunteers can also take a week out of their summer and agree to spot water the garden as needed. We have an irrigation system for most of the beds, but potted plants need to be watered by hand if it doesn’t rain.
Finally, we’re always looking for new ideas for events, gardening projects and workshops. Get in touch if you’d like to do something fun in the garden! To get involved, stop by Sundays 4-6 or email

“Don’t Trash on Me” sidewalk art event with Keep Philadelphia Beautiful and Fleisher’s ColorWheels – June 10, 4-6, Capitolo Playground
Help promote litter prevention! Through a generous grant from Keep Philadelphia Beautiful we’ll be working with some local after school programs and Fleisher Art Memorial’s ColorWheels program to create sidewalk art encouraging passers by to use the Big Belly trash and recycling receptacles near Pat’s and Geno’s. Â Lil’ Pop Shop will be on hand with some free popsicles during the event and the artwork will stay on display into the summer. If you’re not already part of a nearby after school program and you’d like to bring your child to participate, email us at beautification@passyunk.org.
Passeggiata and Inside Out
East Passyunk Business Improvement District is promoting Wednesday evenings as the night for “Passeggiata” – an Italian evening summer stroll on East Passyunk Avenue with discounts and special offers. It’s perfect opportunity to visit all the outdoor reproductions of works from the Philadelphia Museum of Art that are up in our neighborhood! Download a map of the Inside Out sites on our website and take a stroll around the neighborhood! On Wednesday June 3, PSCA and East Passyunk Crossing Civic will be out at the Fountain with maps to give out as well – so stop by and say hello!
Soak it Up! Adoption Program
PSCA continues its partnership with the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) to ensure that stormwater management installations in our neighborhood – the planters and rain garden at Columbus Square Park, the planter outside the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center, the tree trench on 12th Street between Dickinson and Tasker, and the tree trench on 10th street between Wilder and Reed – are as beautiful as they are effective in keeping our water clean.
